El Calafate – Glaciar Perito Moreno

At breakfast we enjoyed a super great view over the lake Lago Argentino, the mountains and the city. After checking out our luggage was put in the storage room, because we have another night here but have to change our room. At 13:00 o’clock we went by bus 1.5 h about 80 km to the glacier Moreno in the national park Los Glaciares. Directly at the parking lot begins a bordered path with railings and grid floor, which leads over stairs and curves to several viewpoints. We had 4 h stay and it was very exciting to watch the impressive natural spectacle. The weather was wonderful, sunshine at 18 degrees. With a loud roar, partly like gunshots, partly like thunder, large and small chunks of ice detached themselves from the up to 70 m high ice wall and fall into the water of Lago Argentino. The glacier is breathtaking. The ice surface, unlike most other glaciers, does not retreat but grows and collapses again at intervals of several years.

A large crested caracara walked among the cars in the parking lot.

At 19:00 we went back to the hostel and there we spent a nice evening in the restaurant. We helped ourselves at the salad buffet and drank Argentine wine.

Punta Arenas – Puerto Natales – El Calafate – travel day

Once again a travel day. On we go to Argentina. At 10:00 o’clock our bus started to Puerto Natales. In 3.5 h we reached the bus station to take the 14:30 bus to El Calafate, where we arrived at 20:30. At the Chilean border we got an exit stamp and at the Argentinean border an entry stamp. Both very uncomplicated and without much control.

In El Calafate we sleep in the America del Sur.
